Holedown is a fun and highly polished brick breaker arcade game that has more strategy and depth to its gameplay than most others in the genre.
Taking place in outer space, the core gameplay has us attempt to get to the very core of various planets by aiming and shooting balls from the top of the screen to destroy the blocks below. As we destroy these blocks, we gradually move deeper and deeper into the planet, which slowly increases the difficulty.
To make things more interesting, some blocks are locked in place and need to be destroyed, while others disappear if we destroy the bricks underneath them. We also have limited shots per round, and limited balls per shot. Combined, these features add a bit of extra strategy to the gameplay, which I greatly enjoyed.
After we either complete a planet or die trying, we can spend crystals collected through gameplay to buy upgrades that add more balls to each shot, increases how many total shots we have, enables us to reach new planets, and much more. It takes approximately six hours to complete all the planets, after which an endless mode has us compete for high-scores on the leaderboards.
One of my personal favorite aspects of the game is that its charmingly simple art-style perfectly fits the minimalistic effects and cute animations to create a relaxing and warm atmosphere - something most other brick breakers don't seem to pay attention to.
Holedown is a $3.99 premium game and its great gameplay experience makes it well worth the price for any fan of brick breakers – especially if you’re tired of the many ad-filled low-quality games that flood the genre on mobile.
